PNetLab Air-Gapped ISO - VMware Workstation Install Guide

This ISO installs PNetLab automatically with NO internet required.
Create the VM, boot the ISO, and WAIT - do not touch the installer.
1. CREATE THE VM (VMware Workstation -> New Virtual Machine -> Custom)
- Guest OS: Linux / Ubuntu 64-bit
- Firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot OFF
- Processors: 4 cores (2 minimum)
- Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT (or AMD-V/RVI): ENABLE (needed to run lab nodes)
- Memory: 8 GB (4 GB minimum)
- Disk: 100 GB (60 GB minimum)
- CD/DVD: Use ISO image -> pnetlab-airgap-20.04.6.iso
- Network: Host-only (recommended)
Host-only is recommended: it gives the VM an IP but no internet,
so the offline install is fast and reliable.
You can switch the adapter to NAT AFTER install if you want your lab nodes to reach the internet.
2. POWER ON AND WAIT
The install is fully automatic. Do NOT press keys, log in early, or reboot it yourself.
It runs in two stages with two automatic reboots:
- Base OS install -> reboots itself
- PNetLab install (~5-8 min, in the background) -> reboots itself again
IMPORTANT: partway through you will see a normal "login:" prompt on the
base kernel. This is NOT finished - the installer is still working in the
background. Leave it alone. Total time about 15-20 minutes.
3. IT IS DONE WHEN YOU SEE THIS SCREEN:
PNETLab (default root password is 'pnet')
Use https or http://<IP-ADDRESS>(DHCP4)/
pnetlab login:
That banner is the finish line.
4. FIRST ROOT LOGIN (REQUIRED - this builds the network bridges)
At the console "pnetlab login:" prompt, log in once as: root / pnet
This runs the PNetLab setup wizard, which:
- asks for root password, hostname, and DHCP or static IP
- creates the management bridge (pnet0) and cloud bridges (pnet1-pnet9)
- then reboots once more.
Until you do this first root login, PNetLab has NO management or cloud
interfaces - this is normal PNetLab behaviour, not a fault.
5. LOG IN AND USE
- Web UI: http://<IP-ADDRESS> -> admin / pnet
- Console/SSH (OS): root / pnet (or pnetlab / pnetlab)
The IP is from DHCP - read the current IP from the banner each boot.
TROUBLESHOOTING
- Stuck at "login:" on kernel 5.4.0-x with "restart required":
Still installing - wait for the second auto-reboot.
Watch progress: tail -f /var/log/pnetlab-firstboot.log
- Confirm it finished: uname -r should be 5.17.15-pnetlab-uksm-2
- Need internet for nodes later: set the NIC to NAT and reboot.
No internet is needed at any point during installation.
